Chance Encounter on the Tiber
An urban experiment: 100 movable chairs and
an unexpected musical performance on the Tiber River
A project by Lisa Bielawa and Robert Hammond
Produced in collaboration with Tevereterno
Chance Encounter on the Tiber is an urban revitalization plan combined with a musical performance composed expressly for outdoor public space. The project will turn the walkway along the Tiber River into a vibrant social open space by focusing on two simple means: movable seating and musical performance.
On May 31, 2010, one hundred red movable chairs will be placed along Tiber and there will be 30-minute musical performances by American soprano Susan Narucki, the Brooklyn Rider String Quartet from New York, and the local Blue Chamber Orchestra of Chance Encounter, composed by Bielawa expressly for outdoor public space. On Sunday May 30, as part of the opening weekend of MAXXI, there will be two preview performances of the project at the museum.
